First, Fortress Press is having a massive ebook/Kindle sale through the end of April. There’s no link to the sale itself at Amazon, rather the 1500 (!) books on sale are listed in a pdf here. My suggestions-
- NT Wright–
- Paul and the Faithfulness of God (normally $60 in paper)
- I also quite like his “the New Testament for Everyone” series
- John Collins
- Introduction to the Hebrew Bible
- I have an earlier edition of this. It’s what many colleges use in their Old Testament/Hebrew Bible intro courses. Very readable.
- Introduction to the Hebrew Bible
- Luke Timothy Johnson
- The Writings of the New Testament
- Also kind of a college course Intro
- Oxford’s Very Short Introduction to the New Testament
- The Writings of the New Testament
- Ben Witherington
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer (German preacher who opposed Hitler, quoted in recent General Conferences)
- The Social Science Commentary on the Bible series
- E.P Sanders books (he helped pionneer the New Perspective on Paul, see my post here)
- Perhaps most accessible is Paul: A Very Short Introduction
- Mark S. Smith (a gentleman and a scholar, now at Princeton)
- The Priestly Vision of Genesis 1 (a book I’ve often recommended and will reference often in my own)
- Some of the Continental Commentary series, including Leviticus by Jacob Milgrom
Second, Logos holds its own March Madness wherein different authors are pitted against each other. The higher the author in the bracket, the greater the discount on the books. The “tournament” has ended so, all of these authors are discounted, from 30% up through April 14. It’s a mix of modern and “classic” authors. Remember, Logos is free, cross-platform, and has some very useful stuff to LDS. See my posts here and here, and get their free book of the month and $1.99 companion here. A selection:
- G.K. Chesterton
- Walter Brueggemann
- Bruce Waltke
- Intro to Biblical Hebrew Syntax!
- Craig Evans
- John Bunyan
- Martin Luther
- I picked up the two Annotated Luther volumes, since I’ll be having a comprehensive exam on Reformation history.
- John Walton
- Lost World of Genesis One
- I reviewed this over at Interpreter, and it’s under 10$ at Logos.
- Genesis 1 as Ancient Cosmology
- This is the more technical/academic version of Lost World.
- The Bible Story Handbook
- A guide to parents for teaching Bible stories. I have a post in the works about teaching scripture to kids that talks about it.
- IVP Bible Background Commentary- Old Testament (1 volume)
- ZIBBCOT Series (a commentary for laypeople focused on cultural and literary background.)
- Lost World of Genesis One
- Joseph Fitzmeyer
- 6 volumes in the Anchor Bible Commentary
- Dead Sea Scrolls material
- Lots of others
- Raymond Brown (like Fitzmeyer, a Catholic priest and series New Testament scholar.)
- Introduction to the New Testament (which is listed twice, once on sale, once not. This is excellent)
- Anchor Bible Commentary, the Gospel of John volume 1, Vol 2
- Epistles of John
- The Birth of the Messiah
- The Death of the Messiah
- Introduction to the Gospel of John
- The Sensus Plenior of Sacred Scripture
- Richard Bauckham
- F.F. Bruce
- And for some reason, the really wonderful 8-volume IVP Bible Dictionary series is 30% off.
Logos has also highlighted some nice interactive visuals (which means they are reconstructed and thus include some degree of interpretation/uncertainty) of Jesus’ tomb, here.
