On April 19th at 7pm, I’ll deliver a lecture, “Henry Eyring Sr. vs. Melvin Cook: Chemistry, Creationism, and Competition for the Authority of Science at the University of Utah.”

Both deeply committed Latter-day Saints, internationally-known specialists in Physical Chemistry, and teaching at the University of Utah, one became a creationist and the other supported an old earth and evolution. What factors pushed these two similar men in opposite directions? What role did their shared religion play? And what do we learn about the larger evolution controversy from their story?

I’ll build on some of the basic ideas from the first part of my lecture here while telling their stories.

Mormon Studies at the U is sponsoring this lecture, which will be recorded for later uploading to YouTube, but not streamed. Lecture will be held in the Jewel Box of the Tanner Humanities Building at 7pm, April 19th.
