Logos does a free book and some other sales every month. They’re launching a new version of the program sometime in September, so the sales right now are interesting. A few things I tend to recommend. These end in a week.
- Faithlife Study Bible, free!
- Faithlife is Logos’ own publisher.
- NRSV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible, $23.99
- This is notes-only, but you can link it to any Bible translation(s) you want. These notes are a distillation of the 9-volume Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary, which you can get in OT or NT sets, individual volumes, or the entire set.
- Jewish Study Bible, $11.99
- Again, notes-only. Excellent notes and essays from a scholarly Jewish position.
- For similar but much more commentary from a Jewish perspective, the JPS Torah Commentary series is on sale both in individual volumes (Genesis), and the entire set.
- Mounce’s Complete Expository Dictionary, $30
- This is what I recommend as a replacement for Strong’s. Combined with a feature called Lexicon Linking (see also my video here and also here), if you have an interlinear-coded Bible (i.e. the English has coding with the Greek/Hebrew underneath), you can jump directly from the English to Greek/Hebrew explanations.
- If you’re into the languages and have maybe done some Hebrew,
- Greenspahn’s Introduction to Aramaic, $21.
- the technical Hebrew/Aramaic lexicon HALOT, which is the standard scholarly tool, for $119.
- The Concise New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis ($60) is a one-volume version of the full 5-volume version ($249, not on sale.)
- This is a good deal on 3 volumes on how the NT uses the OT, including one that goes verse by verse.
- John Walton’s Lost World of Genesis One is on sale for $12, but you can get seven books in his Lost World series for $108.
- Kenton Sparks’ God’s Word in Human Words for $31, and the less technical version Sacred Word, Broken Word: Biblical Authority and the Dark Side of Scripture for $12.
Well, happy shopping and studying.
