It’s been a busy semester, visiting here at BYU. I have not accomplished everything I wanted, and as usual, the end of the semester sees everything collide. That has left less time for writing about Old Testament prep than I’d intended. But in good news, I have four new videos of different kinds!
First, I appeared on British channel All the Saints with Ben Hancock, talking about various things.
Second, I’ve sometimes had inquiries about my views on Genesis 2-3 and the Fall; I’ve spent a lot more time on Genesis 1, but here is a video talking about the Fall, Genesis 2-3, and Atonement; does the scientific reality of evolution undermine Atonement? I argue it does not, and the ultimate source of this idea is a British atheist. (There are occasional audio issues here.)
Third, I spoke at FAIR’s online conference on the Old Testament in October. I argued that close study of modern revelation is leading us to reject inherited Protestant assumptions about the nature of scripture and interpretation. I presented lengthy Church documentation that we should understand scripture in context, as divine-inspired-but-human writings. Once those inherited assumptions are shed, modern revelation functions more as a parachute and help when approaching difficult passages, not a straitjacket binding us to e.g. young-earth creationism, etc. A lengthier version of this paper is coming soon in the companion volume from FAIR.
Finally, last year I had a video go somewhat viral; it was a more popular version of another FAIR talk, but too general. Many people read in a LOT more than was intended. This is a response to that video and comments.
Here’s the more formal video with references and structure.
Here’s the viral video from October 2024.
And here’s the recent response video.
